The Medjool date, also known as the queen of dates, not only has fans worldwide, but also a lot of spellings! Is it “Medjool” or “Medjoul”? Maybe even “Majhool”? The confusion is no coincidence - its name is derived from the Arabic word “Majhool”, which means “the unknown”. But one thing is certain: their sweetness and versatility are anything but unknown!

Quality characteristics of the Medjool date

Ripe Medjool dates weigh between 14 and 25 grams on average and can be up to 6 cm long. After harvesting, they are immediately cleaned and categorised into different size and weight classes.

Another important quality feature is the separation of the skin from the fruit. The less the skin separates from the date, the higher the quality of the Medjool date.

The dates are categorised into different quality categories based on the skin separation:

  • Diamond: up to 5% skin separation
  • Premium: 5-10% skin separation
  • Superior: 10-20% skin separation
  • Selected: 20-40% skin separation

Deglet Nour dates

Deglet Nour dates are known and appreciated all over the world. With a size of 3 to 5 cm and a weight of 8 to 12 g per fruit, they are medium-sized dates.

Their amber-coloured flesh and translucent, shiny skin give them a particularly attractive appearance.

Deglet Nour dates have a pleasant, honey-like sweetness to their flavour. The texture is soft, but at the same time firm enough to be pleasant to bite into - perfect for pure enjoyment.

With or without stone

Deglet Nour dates are available in the usual two varieties: with stone or pitted. Pitting makes the dates a practical convenience product, ideal for direct consumption or processing in recipes, as they can be used immediately without additional pitting.

Dates with a stone remain juicier and have a more intense texture, which makes them very popular with lovers of natural date flavours. The stone also contributes to the longer shelf life of the fruit.

Deglet Nour with panicle/branch

Deglet Nour dates are often sold directly on the panicles (branches), which means that the dates are still hanging on the branches as they originally grew on the tree. This gives the dates a particularly fresh and natural quality.
